“In a play about speech and the power it holds, sound plays a key role
which designer Robin Colyer masterfully crafts.”

The King's Speech – Watermill Theatre, 2024

Sound has always been more than just a part of life – it’s been a constant source of focus, fascination and creative energy.

I grew up surrounded by music, with musician parents and a luthier uncle whose workshop was filled with dismantled instruments and reel-to-reel tapes. That early exposure sparked a lifelong curiosity about how sound works – how it’s made, how it’s captured and shaped, and how it can evoke atmosphere, emotion and place.

Today, I work as a sound designer, composer and musical director for theatre. I create immersive soundscapes, spatial audio, pastiche songs and bespoke musical elements – all crafted to support the storytelling at hand.

My approach is detailed, collaborative and rooted in a lifelong instinct to listen closely – to the material, to the process, and to the people I’m working with.
